enRoute Magazine Presents Drake Devonshire as a winner of the 2015 Hotel Design Awards

Hotel Design Awards 2015: Best Suite
The Winner: Drake Devonshire Inn

Drake Devonshire Inn
Wellington, Ontario

Design: John Tong (+Tongtong)

An interior porch capped by tongue-and-groove board ceiling, a sleeping area tucked under Douglas fir rafters, and an ensuite kept private by clever latticework partitions: The Owner’s Suite is a deceptively simple A-frame loft made functional, thanks to smart separation of space. John Tong, the Toronto-based designer whose work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale and MoMA, is also behind the custom-made rustic-retro furniture. Curl up under the gables in the low-lying beanbag chairs and enjoy the floor-to-ceiling views of the turquoise waters of Lake Ontario.

Hotel Design Awards 2015: Best Restaurant or Bar
The winners: Drake Devonshire Inn and The Miami Beach Edition

Drake Devonshire Inn
Wellington, Ontario

Inspired by nautical light fixtures – fitting, on Lake Ontario – bright-yellow custom glass and wood-turned lanterns line the room. They’re designer John Tong’s favourite detail: “Their warm glow gives the space the feel of a ship’s dining room floating on a calm lake.” A glance up to the peaked ceiling reveals another maritime touch: A central beam has been crochet-bombed by New York’s London Kaye to look like a fishing net – a kitsch trend that is perfectly on-brand for the Drake. Back at eye level, navigate your way through the county with a hand-drawn map of the region’s wineries. And with mix-and-match vintage seating, workbench-inspired high tops and a floor-to-gables art mural in the pavilion, it’s smooth sail-ing from here on out.
